Dear Friend of the Leelanau Historical Society,

Last month's electronic letter announced the opening of the Vistas del Campo/Views from the Field exhibit at the Leelanau Historical Museum. The exhibit, on display until February 1, 2001, was organized by Andrea Stupka and presented in conjunction with the Glen Arbor Art Association. I want to relate a brief story about the exhibit that happened this past weekend.

Last Saturday afternoon, a high school English teacher from suburban Chicago visited the Museum. As part of her curriculum, she teaches John Steinbeck's classic novel of the dust bowl migration, The Grapes of Wrath. Upon seeing the Vistas del Campo exhibit, she suggested that some of its central themes resonate with those of the novel, and that her students would benefit from visiting the exhibit. I indicated that her students could access the on-line component of the exhibit, and we took a look at the Society's website. She said that she would utilize the website when she begins teaching the novel in the spring semester. Encounters like these illustrate how the Society fulfills it mission on a daily basis. The online component of Vistas del Campo may be viewed at www.leelanauhistory.org/projects/vistas/.

On a different note, today is the first day of the annual Museum Store Holiday Sale. Purchasing your holiday gifts at the Museum Store is an excellent way to support the Society and a fine alternative to shopping at the mall. Our largely volunteer-operated Museum Store offers a range of unique gifts, everything from stocking stuffers to fine jewelry. The Holiday Sale takes place on two consecutive weekends: Friday - Sunday, December 1 - 3 and December 8 - 10. The hours are Friday and Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm, and Sunday 12 - 5 pm. All items are at least 10 percent off. You may also want to use these times to view the Museum's current main exhibit, Within Memory: Leelanau in the 20th Century, before it closes on December 31st.

Another highlight this month is the "In Remembrance of Christmases Past" concert. Now in its eighth year, the concert (known as the Chamber Vespers Concert in years past) in Omena's historic Presbyterian Church is a tradition of the Leelanau holiday season. Due to the generosity of concert organizer Lynn Scott, the Society will be the recipient of the concert's proceeds again this year. This year's "In Remembrance of Christmases Past" Concert is Friday, December 29th, 5:00 - 6:30 pm. Make plans to join us for this exceptional event.

Best wishes for a fine month and happy holidays,

Mark Livengood

November 1, 2000 - Leland, Michigan

Dear Friend of the Leelanau Historical Society,

The weather today is more reminiscent of early September than the first day of November. Today we expect sunny skies and a high of 65 degrees -- we'll take it. October was a busy month for the Society. At the monthly Board meeting, the Trustees adopted the Society's three-year strategic plan, Making History. This nine page document provides a blueprint for the ensuing years. Should you like a copy of the plan, please let me know. I would be happy to send one to you.

November will be equally as busy. Today is the opening of Vistas del Campo/Views from the Field: Perspectivas de los Ninos Migratorios/Migrant Children's Perspectives, an exhibit organized by Andrea Stupka and presented in conjunction with the Glen Arbor Art Association. A portion of this exhibit may be viewed on the Society's website, www.leelanauhistory.org/projects/. On Friday, November 10th, the Civil War veterans of Leelanau County will be the topic of a special Veterans' Day program at the Museum. Leonard G. Overmyer III, author of the recently published Forest Haven Soldiers: The Civil War Veterans of Glen Lake and Surrounding Leelanau will give the illustrated talk beginning at 7 pm. There is no charge for admission. On Tuesday, November 28, a second organizational meeting for the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future, will be held at the Museum at 7 pm. The initial meeting, held last week, generated a number of good ideas and considerable excitement for the exhibit, which the Society will host beginning in November 2001. For more information about Yesterday's Tomorrows, contact Laura Quackenbush, the project director.

Finally, this month we will publish the Society's newsletter, LeeMuse. It should arrive by the end of the month.

Thank you for your continuing support. Please contact me should you have any questions or concerns: livengood@leelanauhistory.org.

Best regards for a fine month and a Happy Thanksgiving,

Dear Friend of the Leelanau Historical Society,

The Internet occasions the opportunity to communicate in new ways. I want to seize upon this technology each month to keep you up-to-date on some of the many activities of the Leelanau Historical Society. In this way, we can increase communication with our members and continue to be responsive to our community.

October is National Arts and Humanities month. Of the approximately 15,000 museums in the United States, seventy-five percent of those museums are small museums, and forty-three percent are situated in rural areas. The Leelanau Historical Museum is in good company. The arts and humanities play critical roles in our lives. They help us to understand who we are and where we are, and imagine who we will be and where we are going. They also make life more enjoyable.

This month, the Leelanau Historical Society is presenting two programs that further our mission and our commitment to the arts and humanities. First, our annual barn tour is scheduled for 1 - 5pm on Sunday, October 8th. The barn tour enables people to explore the agricultural heritage of Leelanau County and become familiar with some of the issues that family farmers face today. Second, an organizational meeting will be held at the Museum on October 24th at 7 p.m. to begin planning for the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit "Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future," that we will host beginning in November 2001. A year's worth of planning will allow us to develop a great series of programs that localize and complement the exhibit's central themes. More information about these events is available on the "News & Events" page of our website, www.leelanauhistory.org.

Please pass this message along to anyone who may be interested in the Society's important mission. In turn, if you know anyone who is interested in being added to the Society's email list, just let me know.

Thank you for your continuing support. Please contact me should you have any questions or concerns: livengood@leelanauhistory.org.

Best regards for a fine month,

Mark Livengood
