On October 24, 2000, the Leelanau Historical Society Board of Trustees adopted a three-year strategic plan, Making History. The plan focuses the activities and functions of the Society. The plan's fundamental sections are outlined here.
Vision
The Leelanau Historical Society is a dynamic educational resource that people use in their everyday lives.
Mission
The Leelanau Historical Society inspires people to explore the past, understand the present, and envision the future of the diverse cultures in the Leelanau Peninsula and its islands.
To fulfill this Mission, the Society:
- Operates the Leelanau Historical Museum.
- Collects, documents, preserves, and makes accessible objects and information.
- Provides a center for research.
- Creates interpretive exhibits, programs, and publications.
- Seeks out and encourages the participation of the people of Leelanau County.
- Collaborates with local, state, and national partners.
Values
The Leelanau Historical Society is a value-driven organization. The following values animate all aspects of Society operations and all that we endeavor to accomplish: Creativity, Diversity, Excellence, Integrity, and Service.
Goals
In the next three years, the Leelanau Historical Society will pursue five goals that address major operational areas: exhibits and programs, collections, facilities, human resources, and finances.
Goal 1. Generate innovative exhibits, programs, research, and educational opportunities while increasing the number and diversity of active participants.
Goal 2. Manage and develop the Museum's collections in accordance with recognized best practices.
Goal 3. Develop the Society's facilities and infrastructure while providing for long-term operational needs.
Goal 4. Recruit, train, and retain diverse staff, trustees, and volunteers while raising the professional standards of Society operations.
Goal 5. Diversify and develop the Society's revenue base and maintain fiscal responsibility by using best practices from nonprofit organizations.
Specific objectives accompany each one of these goals. An action agenda that suggests a variety of actions, persons responsible, and timeframes complements the strategic plan. By steadfastly pursuing the goals and objectives oultined in the plan, the Society will move toward realizing its vision.
