About Us

Since its beginning in 1957, the Leelanau Historical Society has been an important cultural institution in Leelanau County. Founded by representatives from all parts of the county, the Society officially incorporated in 1964.

The Society is a private, nonprofit organization with approximately 500 members. It was granted nonprofit 501(c)(3) status in 1970 and renewed this designation in 1998. The Society has a board comprised of fifteen trustees.

With nearly 110 people volunteering in various ways for the Society annually, volunteers are the heart and soul of the organization. The Society's staff includes a director, curator, and an administrator.
