The Leelanau Historical Society announces a fellowship in honor of industrialist and philanthropist Edmund F. Ball. Mr. Ball, a lifelong summer resident of Leland, Michigan, was a champion of the humanities and education and a longtime supporter the Leelanau Historical Society.
Located in Northwest Lower Michigan, Leelanau County, including the peninsula and its islands, presents exciting possibilities for research on the area's rich cultural history. The Edmund F. Ball Fellowship provides monetary support for an independent researcher or a graduate student enrolled at an accredited university (excluding Leelanau Historical Society staff, trustees, and their families) to conduct original research specifically on the cultural history of Leelanau County.
Independent researchers and graduate students in the fields of History, American Studies, Ethnic and Area Studies, Museum Studies, Folklore, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Documentary Studies, Film Studies, Women's Studies, and related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Research areas are broadly defined, and include, but are not limited to: Great Lakes maritime history and culture, agricultural history and culture, resort history and culture, Native American history and culture, historic preservation, environmental history, folklore, and oral history. Creative research projects may involve fieldwork or and/or utilize the Leelanau Historical Museum's extensive archives of photographs and documents or collection, including a signature collection of Anishnabek traditional arts. Projects ideally will involve Leelanau community members.
During his or her twelve-month tenure, the Edmund F. Ball Fellow will be required to produce an essay of publishable quality and make a public presentation at the Leelanau Historical Museum based on his or her research. The stipend is $2500. This fellowship is made possible by a generous contribution from the George and Frances Ball Foundation in memory of Edmund F. Ball.
