The Leelanau Historical Society has been awarded a 2001 Conservation Assessment Program grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and Heritage Preservation. The grant will help the Society to optimize its collections management procedures and to establish goals so that its holdings can be preserved and made available to the public for years to come. "The Conservation Assessment Program grant comes at an important time as the Society continues to develop plans for how to best fulfill our role as stewards of the communitys heritage," said Director R. Mark Livengood. "In the past several months we have received significant additions to our collection, and the grant will be instrumental in helping us to determine how to best care for these items, as well as for all of the objects, photos, and documents in our considerable collection." The grant supports a two-day visit by a conservation assessor who reviews the overall condition of the museums collection, the physical storage and exhibition conditions, and the collection practices among other factors. The assessor is scheduled to visit the Leelanau Historical Society June 25-27, 2001. Heritage Preservations President, Lawrence L. Reger, praised the Leelanau Historical Society for "making the vital work of caring for collections a priority and helping to ensure that they are available to present and future generations."
