Leelanau County Cultural Resources Survey
A legion of robots marches down Main Street in Leland's annual 4th of July parade, announcing the upcoming Smithsoninan Institution traveling exhibition, Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future. The exhibit is scheduled for the Leelanau Historical Museum in November and December.
The Leelanau County Cultural Resources Survey is a collaboration between the Leelanau Historical Museum and the Michigan Traditional Arts Program of Michigan State University Museum. The goal of the project is to work with community members to document the expressive traditions of the diverse cultures of the county, including events, artisans, gatherings, and occupations.

Outcomes of the project include enhanced outreach to all parts of Leelanau County, creation of a comprehensive set of documentary materials, and exhibitions.

The project will take an estimated three years to complete. The initial year is a general survey, followed by investigations of more specific topics. The Cultural Resources Survey will reflect the geographic, ethnic, age, gender, and socioeconomic diversity of Leelanau County's population.

You Can Help!

The Cultural Resources Survey is a community-driven project. We seek to identify living tradition bearers and to create a volunteer team of interviewers, photographers, videographers, and writers. Previous experience in research techniques is not required. An objective of the project is to train community members who can carry on the task of documentation and spirit of the project in the future.

Are you interested in being part of a team? Do you know someone who would like to be involved as a cultural resource? Contact Noel Allende at the Leelanau Historical Museum.
