The Good family came to the Cedar area in 1866. Marjorie Good lives in a house built on the original homestead property. She talks about her lifelong joy of learning and teaching and her love of nature:
Our grandfather lived with us and he was very special. he took us fishing on the first day of May -- did lots of things with us [He helped develop] my interest in nature. A jolly good fellow he was. A good teacher.
Miss Good's long career included teaching in Leelanau County rural schools and urban elementary schools in Lansing, Michigan:
I linked teaching first and second grade when they were learning to read. I was interested in nature and I stressed that. We would go for a walk around the block and learn there were five different kinds of maple trees and go down to the park and look at everything.
