William G. Thomas' great-grandfather brought his family to Northport from Pennsylvania in 1854, inspired by a letter written to the New York Tribune by local entrepreneur Joseph Dame. His father married Louisa Kehl and, after her death, Charlotte (Lotte) Bushnell, Northport's first librarian. In 1895, Lotte built the village house where Dr. Thomas and his wife now live.
The railroad is an intimate part of our memories, because it goes right
through our front yard. As a kid, we would put pennies on the track, or just
get on the track. The engineer always knew there would be kids on the track,
so he would be leaning out of the window, waving his fist--and then at the
last minute we would jump into the ditch. We didn't lose any kids, but I'm
sure the mothers were frantic.
