Development Process

Develop the mission for the Web site. Like organizations, Web sites require a definition of purpose. Define the role of the site within the organization and within the online community.

Identify Web site content and provider(s). Determine what content in the form of text, images, online applications, etc. will be available through the site and who will provide and update that content.

Designate organization representatives. As with any large project, there are numerous decisions required of the organization in the process of building a Web site. Often a committee can be selected to make these decisions and ensure that site development proceeds smoothly.

Create an RFP. A well-written Request for Proposals will help Internet developers to accurately respond to the organization's needs and allow the organization to evaluate developers based upon a common standard. Included in the RFP should be desired functionality, timetable and expectations.

Choose a developer. Criteria for the selection of a developer include:
  • Accuracy of response to RFP
  • Response time to RFP (one leading complaint of businesses and organizations regarding Web developers is that "They are too busy to return my calls or do my work")
  • References from clients of developer
  • Quality of developer's online body of work
  • Price and value of services
Define the process. In your initial meeting with the developer, be sure to define the process that will be followed in the creation of the Web site including timetables and format and method of content transfer.
