Call for Storytellers: “Meet Me at The Loaf”

A Celebration of Sugar Loaf in Stories

The Leelanau Historical Society and Here:Say Storytelling are coming together to stage an evening of live, true, first-person storytelling that celebrates the wild, weird, warm, and wonderful legacy of Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Meet Me at The Loaf” A Celebration of Sugar Loaf in Stories
This show, November date and location TBA, will feature 6 performers sharing stories that speak to the hill’s impact over time: stories of adventure, hilarity, heartache, transformation, and the unmistakable spirit of “The Loaf”.

Submissions are OPEN!

We’re looking for real stories from real people. Do you have a story that only could have happened at, or because of Sugar Loaf?

This call is open to:

  • Former Sugar Loafers, lodge lovers, staffers, ski bums, and community members!
  • Locals and travelers from any era—1940s to present day.
  • Those whose stories intersect with Sugar Loaf, even in small but meaningful ways.
  • Regional skiers or snow lovers with stories that have a clear thread to “The Loaf.”

What We’re Looking For

The most memorable stories on stage pull the audience in and get them to feel invested in what happened to you – feeling the joy of your triumphs or the sting of your disappointments. We are looking for….

  • True, first-person stories of lived experience, that you can say, “This happened to me.”
  • Tone: Funny, emotional, inspiring, bittersweet—we’re open to all flavors.
  • Length: 8-10 minutes
  • Scope: Each story should have an arc with a beginning, middle, and end and tell what happened rather than a speech, a memoir of a journey,, or an evaluation of how you feel about it. Focus on one story rather than a series of anecdotes.
  • Content: Stories don’t need to be about skiing! We want a variety—romances, mishaps, reunions, ghosts, bar stories, lodge moments, regional ski memories—anything with heart and connection to Sugar Loaf.

What’s the Process Like?

No experience necessary. All storytellers will receive one-on-one coaching from Kabie Stein, founder and creative director of Here:Say Storytelling.

If selected, here’s what to expect:

  1. Meeting with Kabie to brainstorm your story (In Person or video chat)
  2. Submit a draft.
  3. Receive feedback from Kabie.
  4. Revise and refine with Kabie’s support.
  5. Rehearse for a live audience.
  6. Take the stage and share your story!

Note: The event will be recorded for archival purposes for the Leelanau Historical Society and Here:Say Storytelling.
